this vicious cartoon I found in my research in the book "The best circles" by Leonore Davidoff. He first appeared in 1892 in the satirical magazine Punch .
The cartoon shows very distinctly the then common practice of social "cutting", ie the deliberate ignoring of people they saw as his "undignified".
"There go the Spicer Wilcox, Mom!
I'm told they're dying to know us! We better call!"
"Certainly not, dear! If they're dying to know us, they're not worth knowing.
The only people worth knowing OUR are the people who DO want to know us."
The proper translation goes something like: ". There are the Spicer Wilcox, Mom Where I want to know, know they must let us welcome you to us."
"Certainly not, my love If they really want to get to know us, they are not worthy, that we know it.
The only people who are worth it, they know that WE are the people who DO NOT want to get to know us. "
* * Schmunzel
Apparently there today gives us some districts in which such behavior is common ... ;-)
I wish you a nice and relaxing weekend !
Love,
